JORVIK Viking Centre Collections Up-Close Placement
This placement offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience of artefact interpretation in a visitor facing environment. Placements are given training to deliver two artefact handling and viewing opportunities assisting visitors to explore their location on the site of the dig which founded the JORVIK Viking Centre. This is an ideal role for anyone wanting a taster experience of archaeological interpretation and engagement through finds.
Heritage Opportunities Placement
This placement offers an opportunity to gain broad range of heritage work experience with the placement offering five days of experience in a visitor facing role as a JORVIK Viking Centre Collections-up Close Placement (please see above) and five days split between a range of our key departments such as Curatorial, Education and Archaeology. The departments on offer will vary depending on the projects and tasks available. This is an ideal role for anyone considering a future in heritage work but who is unsure of the roles on offer or types of work that would most interest them.
Collections Interpretation Placement
This placement offers experience in both our Collections and Archives department and undertaking the delivery of our Collections-up Close placement at JORVIK.
The placement offers experience across the two departments to learn how we care for and manage our collections and how this supports our work to then interpret and deliver the collection to our visitors.
This is an idea role for anyone seeking experience of archaeological collections care and interpretation.
How do I apply?
Apply here with us while our application period is open.
Applications are usually advertised and open around December for placements happening February – April and in April for placements happening between June–October.
Can I apply outside of an application period?
We regret we are unable to accept applications outside of the application periods
What happens after I apply?
After an application period closes we will contact everyone who has applied and arrange to meet with those people we may have a suitable place for. At this meeting we will ask you some questions to see if we can match you to a suitable placement. We will be able to allocate and confirm the placements after the meeting. Any offer of a place will just be pending references.
Can I apply from abroad or if I don’t live in York?
We welcome applications from outside of York. Overseas applicants will need to ensure they can arrange a suitable visa to allow them to undertake the placement. We are happy to arrange video interviews for anyone from abroad or anyone unable to travel to York for their interview.
How old do I need to be to undertake a placement?
All our placements are open to anyone aged 18 or above. For anyone under 18 years of age we offer work experience via the NYBEP (North Yorkshire Business & Education Partnership) scheme which offers York schools opportunities to get involved in the Trust.
